Understanding A.I.:

Artificial intelligence is technology that allows for machines to mimic human learning, creativity, and stimulation. There are many different types of A.I., and each have their own specific jobs.
  • Narrow A.I. is programmed for a specific set of tasks within certain parameters and can't do anything outside of those tasks.
  • General A.I. is like humans, and can choose how to apply strategies to do a variety of different tasks.
  • Super A.I. has intelligence that surpasses that of all humans.
At this time only Narrow A.I. exists. Within Narrow A.I. there are four basic functionalities that a system can do: limited memory, reactive, self-aware, and theory of mind. Self-awareness and theory of mind are conceptual.
  • Reactive systems can only react to stimuli or input given to it by a user.
  • They can't remember or learn from previous experiences.
  • Limited memory systems do everything that reactive systems can do, but they can also remember from past experiences, and use that to adapt to the future.
  • Currently they can only do things based off of the prompts that they receive.
  • Generative A.I.'s goal is to make new content and mimic what humans do.
  • It's not designed to be factual, but to pretend to do what people do in areas of communication.
  • Communicative A.I. stimulates human communication in the way of conversation.
  • It can only respond based on the prompt it is given.
A.I. can be helpful, especially with things like basic math! However it can also generate misinformation. The very programming of A.I. doesn't allow for it to cite actual sources.
  • A.I. produces a mix of fact and fiction, this can be checked with something called lateral reading:
  • Which is leaving the site after reading some information
  • Cross checking that same information with other trusted sources
  • Not using just a single source
